Tenn woman's plea delayed by attorney's death

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (AP) -- A Washington County woman school bus driver's plans to plead guilty to a wreck that injured dozens of students came to a halt after her attorney died.

Brenda Gray was scheduled to appear in court Monday on eight counts of reckless aggravated assault, 31 counts of felony reckless endangerment, speeding, reckless driving and failure to exercise due care. There is an assault or endangerment charge for each of the 39 students on the bus.

The Johnson City Press reported that Gray's attorney, Michael LaGuardia, died July 1 of a heart attack. That prompted prosecutors to put the plea deal on hold.

The case is set for July 29.

The bus crash happened Sept. 20. Tennessee Highway Patrol traffic investigators determined Gray was speeding and at fault for the crash.
