Pfc. Cecil Harris

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- The remains of a World War II soldier discovered near the French/German border are returning to Tennessee 70 years after he disappeared.

WPLN-FM reports a funeral service for Pfc. Cecil Harris of Shelbyville is scheduled for Friday near Chattanooga, where his former wife, Helen Cooke, lives. He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

The site of Harris' remains was discovered last year by a French hiker who saw a large rock with a crudely engraved "H" on it. U.S. officials excavated and found Harris' dog tags.

Harris was just 19 when he went missing in action. He posthumously received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

In addition to his former wife, Harris is survived by son William Edwin Harris of Mountain City and sister Janice Carlton of Shelbyville.
