Tennessee Man Dies On Diving Trip

KEY WEST, Fla. (WVLT) -- Authorities say a Tennessee man on vacation with his wife and 10-month old baby died while diving offshore of Key West.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said that 39-year-old Ollie Macon Smithwick, from Cookeville, was spearfishing with two friends near the Vandenburg shipwreck Thursday morning.

Smithwick went into the water first, and his friends reported finding him unresponsive about 15 minutes later. Unable to get him to the surface, they returned to their boat and called 911.

The U.S. Coast Guard responded and pulled Smithwick from the water. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of his death.
