Trash rack to capture debris in Memphis harbor

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A new floating structure near a Memphis pumping station will prevent trash and other debris from entering the city's Wolf River Harbor.

The floating "trash rack" was recently completed by the firm SSR Ellers and is adjacent to the Bayou Gayoso Pumping Station. It consists of floating piers with a baffle curtain to corral the trash in the water.

Paul Patterson, administrator of environmental engineering for Memphis, told The Commercial Appeal that city employees will manually clean out the trash rack as it fills with debris using nets or boats.

Boaters, tourists and residents have complained about the mess on the harbor created by litter washed into the city's drainage system.
