NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Tennessee Division of Forestry is urging property owners along urban streams to plant trees near the creek banks.
The Tennessean reported a $300,000 federal grant is helping continue a program in Davidson, Rutherford and Williamson counties.
State Forester Jere Jeter said a clean and plentiful urban water supply is linked to urban trees, especially along waterways.
The state is giving property owners native trees in exchange for the owners planting them along streams and nurturing them to maturity.
The watersheds targeted include Mill Creek, Richland Creek, Browns Creek, Hurricane Creek and the Stones River.
More than 400 volunteers have so far planted more than 2,700 trees at seven locations in Middle Tennessee.
