KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Discount Tobacco & Grocery is open again after robbers killed Parvez Ahmed, the store's owner, Saturday evening.
Police arrested Jaevaugn Hayes and Meleek Morrison for the crime. They're still looking for a third suspect.
"We know that there's people in the community that know who he is and where he's at and we're hoping that they'll do the right thing and provide us with information so we can take him off the street as well," said Darrell DeBusk, with the Knoxville Police Department.
According to warrants, Hayes demanded money from the cashier, and when the man made a sudden movement away from him, he fired a shot that missed and then shot and killed Ahmed, who had been stocking a cooler.
Some business owners in the area said it's the latest example of how rough East Magnolia Avenue can be. Buddy Norwood works across the street and said he's seen gunfire.
"There was some shooting going on across the street about a month ago. And there's a bullet hole in the front door - where it came through the door and went into the hood of the car," said Norwood, who owns Norwood Race Cars.
He said robbers have also tried to rip him off.
"I've been approached by people with guns that tried to rob me before. And I'm just lucky I got away with it, they didn't bother me. Can't ever tell what's going to happen," said Norwood.
Norwood is hopeful police will add more patrols and crack down on what he calls a high crime area. But police said robberies and murders can happen anywhere, and said there's a reason the area has more crime than others:
"It's a densely populated area - and the more population that you have, the more incidents of crime that you're going to have," said DeBusk.
Hayes and Morrison are both charged with Felony Murder and Attempted Aggravated Robbery.
