KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Officers responded to shooting in Knoxville at the intersection of Selma Avenue and Skyline Drive on Friday night. Jamar Gilmore was found near the grass of the intersection with several gunshot wounds to the head and neck.
According to two witnesses, who were with the Gilmore during the shooting, Gilmore and his girlfriend, Jamika Cannon, were riding in a grey Jeep Cherokee with the witnesses following in a Chevy Tahoe. At some point the Jeep made contact with several individuals near the intersection of Selma and Skyline. Shortly after the individuals began shooting at the victim and his girlfriend. The Gilmore got out of the Jeep and ran a short distance before dropping in the grass. Witnesses said one of the suspects jumped in the Jeep and drove off with Cannon still inside.
After fleeing the shooting location, one of the two suspects forced a male at gunpoint back into his car and ordered him to take him to another location. After reaching their location the suspect pointed the gun at the victim and pulled the trigger, but the gun did not discharge. A struggle ensued during which time the victim was able to flee the vehicle on foot. The suspect fled the scene in the victim's vehicle.
A KPD officer located the Jeep Cherokee traveling on Rutledge Pike near I-40. Cannon was the only one found inside the vehicle. She had several gunshot wounds.
The suspect has been identified as Dewayne Wells, Jr.
Wells has been charged with: Carjacking, Attempted 1st Degree Murder, Aggravated Kidnapping, Use of a Firearm During a Dangerous Felony, Fleeing along with several additional driving-related charges.
Additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.
Investigators are currently working to positively identify and locate the second suspect.
Both victims have been released from UT Medical.
