U.T. tuition hike passed

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees passed an 8% tuition hike for next year of the Knoxville students. That tranlates into $289 per semester or $578 per year.

U.T. Chattanooga and U.T. Martin students will pay 6% more in tuition.

Democrats wanted Governor Haslam to call a special legislative session this summer to freeze U.T. tuition hikes and use the tax surplus for higher education.

Governor Haslam declined by saying, "Do we need to address tuition and the issue around higher education across the state? You bet we do. We also have a lot of other needs in the state as well. So are we going to use it for that and ignore our other needs? Or do we do what I think responsible people do with their budget and consider all needs across the state and go from there?"

Board members also voted on a plan to make students pay for 15 hours even if they're just taking 12 credit hours. That starts with the incoming 2013 freshmen. Current students won't be affected by this rule which is designed to get students to graduate on time and bring in more students to the university.
