ERWIN, Tenn. (AP) -- The Unicoi County Commission has chosen Mike Hensley as interim sheriff.

Hensley was a sheriff's office employee and was one of three candidates who submitted applications to the commission.

The Johnson City Press reported commission members voted 7-1 Monday night to put Hensley in charge of the department from which former Sheriff Kent Harris left office.

When Harris' resignation was accepted by the commission after it was submitted March 1, the office was declared vacant

Harris was indicted on 11 criminal counts, including seven alleging official misconduct. Trials are pending.

Hensley said he intends to seek election to the office in August.
