Union University in Jackson closed due to illness

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) -- Union University officials say the school's campus in Jackson is closed until Wednesday due to an outbreak of stomach illness.

University spokesman Tim Ellsworth says about 300 students have reported suffering a stomach sickness. Ellsworth says most of the ill students come from the university's residential population of 1,100.

A statement posted on the university's website says all classes at the Jackson campus, including undergraduate and graduate classes, have been canceled. The library and wellness center also have been closed.

University President David S. Dockery said the goal is to limit further spread of the illness and address health concerns of the students.

Classes are scheduled to resume at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Ellsworth says the campus has a total of about 3,000 students.
