Vet hospital turns cat hair into Christmas cheer

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- An East Tennessee veterinary hospital was able to help local families have a merry Christmas by collecting bags of cat hair.

Strange as it may sound, the Jonesborough Animal Hospital collected 2.6 pounds of feline fur and sold it to Greer Laboratories Inc. in Lenoir, N.C., where it will be used to formulate allergy injections for cats.

The hospital received $325 for the fluff. That money plus donations from staff were used to adopt three Angel Tree children from area elementary schools, buy stocking stuffers for a school and purchase food for a family of eight, according to the Johnson City Press.

Technician James Chatman said it feels great to take something that would have gone into the trash and use it to help families.
