WWII Veteran attacked by Kentucky woman

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (WKYT) - His eyes, though currently black and blue, have seen a lot in Ralph Covington's 90 years.

"I made six trips through North Africa, Oran (Algeria), and Casablanca (Morocco), outrunning German submarines," he described of his tours in World War II while serving in the Navy.

In spite of all he survived, plus getting gangrene in his leg, it was in his own front yard where he was roughed up.

"I never thought I'd live to see the day that I'd get so weak, that some girl would beat me up," Covington scoffed.

The assault happened early Saturday morning, and it began with a knock on Covington's door.

"At 3 o'clock in the morning and I looked out there and I think she had a hood on and everything and I said, 'Is that you Casey?' She said, 'Yes.'"

It wasn't his relative, but Covington helped the woman all the same.

"She said her mother had locked her out and her mother was keeping her baby, and she needed $40 to pay her mother."

Covington said a few hours later the same woman came back, and again was looking for money but this time he told her he couldn't help her anymore.

"I said, 'I'm on a fixed income and I can't give you anymore.'"

The woman, who police identify as Amanda Pergram, didn't like that answer and grabbed Covington's truck keys as she walked out his door. Covington followed after.

"She spun me around and grabbed that jacket and threw me down like a baby, jumped down on top of me and started ramming my head, beating my head."

Covington was knocked out for nearly an hour and when he came to he was afraid someone might still be in his house. He went to his usual breakfast, Fava's, spot to call the police.

The 90-year-old was left with a concussion, his jaw broken in two places, and stitches on his nose. Yet, somehow, he sees a silver lining.

"I feel like I'm lucky to escape like I did," explained Covington, that the temperature that morning was in the 40s. He figures if it were in the 20s like it had been, he would've caught hypothermia and likely died.

Police are now searching for Pergram and have warrants for robbery and assault. They say they'd like to ask her about the assaults, they also say her boyfriend, Noel McCaulley, is a person of interest. Officers say it's likely Pergram was released from jail just days before this attack.

We're told officers have searched multiple counties for Pergram. Police say she may be in a white or cream-colored PT Cruiser with Florida plates.
