Washington County United Way pleads for funds

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- United Way of Washington County is $225,000 short of its 2012 fundraising goal with only a week to go.

The Johnson City Press reports the charity hopes to raise $1.775 million to support 17 area health and human service agencies that help an estimated 90,000 residents.

Money donated to United Way helps fund programs that include the Johnson City Salvation Army shelter for homeless men, women and children. Up to 70 people are housed there nightly, and this year 11 children will spend Christmas at the shelter.

The charity also has aided residents left homeless by August's flood, the 2011 tornadoes and house fires.

United Way of Washington County President and CEO Lester Lattany said that if the campaign falls short, some services may have to be cut.
