JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (AP) -- A Washington County Detention Center inmate has died in custody.
A sheriff's office spokesman said 22-year-old Stewart W. Peppers of Johnson City was found unconscious late Monday afternoon. The Johnson City Press reported Peppers died while being taken by ambulance from the jail in Jonesborough to the Johnson City Medical Center.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is reviewing Peppers' death, which is routine, but no foul play was suspected. An autopsy will be conducted.
Peppers was being held on suspicion of pulling a gun on a woman. He was charged on April 25 with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, felony vandalism and two drug counts.
