Weather services confirms 3 Tennessee tornadoes

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The National Weather Service is confirming that three tornadoes hit Middle Tennessee during severe thunderstorms Monday.

NWS officials said Tuesday evening that tornadoes struck Dickson County, Waverly and southeast Davidson/northwest Rutherford counties. Winds were 100 to 110 mph.

The storms lashed Tennessee from the Mississippi River to the Smoky Mountains, leaving a trail of damage throughout the state.

Meanwhile Tuesday evening, about 16,700 customers were without power in the Memphis area and about 5,000 customers had no electricity in Nashville.

An elderly Memphis man was killed Monday when he came into contact with a live power line outside his home.

Most of the damage in East Tennessee came from straight-line winds.
