SEVIER COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- It's illegal to sell fireworks in Knox County, but just over the county line in Sevier, folks are flocking to fireworks stands to load up in time for the Fourth of July.

"Ahhh, I think in Sevier County you're ok," said Susan Sutphin. She's uncertain for a reason. There's a hodge podge of local laws on fireworks use.

In Knoxville shooting fireworks is legal, for now. City Council will soon decide if it should be banned. Using fireworks is also legal in Knox and Sevier counties. That's not the case in Anderson County and Sevierville.

It's no surprise some firefighters support a ban. "Leave the fireworks to the professionals," said Capt. D.J. Corcoran of the Knoxville Fire Department.

No way says Susan Sutphin, who has small children to please. But, she's still thinking safety. "We have a fire extinguisher at our house, and we're going to have six adults with three children," said Sutphin.

"As long as you have common sense when you do the fireworks. Kids definitely need to have adult supervision," said Sandy Rausch of Parker Fireworks. But what happens when common sense isn't so common when it comes to fireworks? The results of improper use could be catastrophic.

"Fires can start. Bodily injuries from fireworks, you know, people having fingers blown off, eyes put out," said Corcoran.

"No one ever needs to be drinking and doing fireworks. Just make sure that you're always in a safe location with no low hanging trees over you," said Rausch.

The Knoxville City Council is scheduled to vote on banning fireworks at its meeting on June 27th.
