KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) - Wildlife groups along with a 5th grade class are releasing 2,600 endangered lake sturgeon at noon into the waters at the Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge.

Students from a 5th grade class at Gap Creek Elementary have been caring for "Spike," a juvenile lake sturgeon since the beginning of the school year.

The Tennessee Aquarium and its partners have reintroduced more than 125,000 lake sturgeon to the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers since 1998.

Sturgeon can grow to more than eight feet in length, and live nearly 150 years.
