Youth, 16, dies when weapon discharges

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Shelby County Sheriff's deputies say a teenager accidentally shot himself to death.

Sheriff's spokesman Chip Washington said Friday that deputies were sent to a shooting call late Thursday and arrived to find a youth had been shot in the upper chest.

Washington said 16-year-old Himyar Hassan was treated by emergency medical personnel, but was pronounced dead at the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed Hassan was handling a loaded .45-caliber handgun when it discharged and the bullet struck him.
