Sheriff says trash cleanup is crime prevention

Posted: 02/18/2009 - ERWIN, Tenn. (AP) -- An East Tennessee sheriff says there's a correlation between trash and crime. Unicoi County Sheriff Kent Weeks has made a list of spots where his employees will pick up trash, including old car tires and gasoline tanks illegally dumped along roads. Weeks told the Johnson City Press experience has shown him trashy areas breed more than mosquitoes -- they breed crime as well. Harris said the department has cleaned up several illegal dump sites over the past few years. The sheriff said the cleanup is taking place in the winter to minimize the danger of workers being struck by snakes.
