KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- What if you had to come up with a cupcake that made you think of the North Pole? What would you come up with? A local elementary school took part in a contest to do just that.
Yummy treats are a must this time of year especially at Cities Cupcake Boutique. They came up with a contest where people could submit recipes that reminded them of Christmas and the North Pole.
This contest inspired Mrs. Foss' 5th grade class at A.L Lotts Elementary to do a little more creative writing in class.
"One area that we practice is descriptive writing. So I looked at this contest and said this is perfect to work on with my students."
The kids then wrote a paragraph using descriptive words about their cupcake, drew a picture and submitted it to the contest.
After a tough competition; Cities Cupcake Boutique came up with the winners. In first place, a gingerbread cupcake with milk chocolate in the batter topped with eggnog frosting. They will start baking and selling these yummy treats soon and all the proceeds will go to the Empty Stocking Fund.
In second place, David Acton, a 5th grader from Mrs. Foss' class won with a red velvet cupcake with a black cherry frosting.
Mrs. Foss says she is pleased with her students but above all she hopes they learn more than just writing skills
"If you work diligently. You can be successful." says Mrs. Foss
