KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Dollywood might be closed for the season but there's a lot of work going on behind the scenes.
It might not look like much now but soon this construction site will be the newest attraction to the park. It's called "The Barnstormer".
Pete Owens of Dollywood explains, "It's a big swing I guess is probably the easiest way to explain it but it's a swing that goes 45 mph. It has an arch of about 230 degrees and it's really going to be thrilling for families with kids."
He says, " It's kind of an in between ride meaning it's not a roller coaster but it's not a kiddie ride. It's going to be great to add into the mix of rides we have here at Dollywood."
Construction is in full "swing" and the ride will be up and running by opening day on March 26th.
"We actually are a little bit ahead of schedule just because we started early in September to start the demolition and construction. Our work crew has really worked hard to stay on time." says Pete.
Located where Dreamland Forest use to be; this site will be more than just a ride.
Pete explains, "The rest of the area is going to be now called the Owens Farm named after Dolly's family."
There will be a pig pen which features a giant soft structure pig that kids can climb on. Along with pop fountains which were popular in Dreamland Forest.
The pig pen isn't the only play place for kids. There will also be a place called "Granny's Garden" where kids can play and climb on soft structures of giant vegetables and dragonflies.
Plus, Pete tells us, "There's going to be a crashed plane that will be a climb on structure and there will be a slide. A lot of different activities for kids to do here that aren't quite tall enough to ride Barnstormer yet."
It's fun for the whole family including those who might be wheelchair bound. "If you are in a wheel chair and want to ride the ride you now have the opportunity to do that with relative ease." Thanks to a modified seat with an easy access ramp.
It's shaping up to be another great season at Dollywood! The park opens March 26th for everyone to enjoy for the 2011 season.
