KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- On a hot day, nothing is better than a cold treat. So, we're making our own, and we know they're healthy too.
There are so many 'reasons' to make your own frozen desserts ... you know what went into your food, sneak in fruits and veggies for kids, have a dietary concern, use up fresh foods, add in protein.
Now, here's how you do it.
What you need:
- your choice of ingredients
- blender to puree
- popsicle mold
All you have to do is puree your favorite fruits. You can add a little yogurt, milk, or water as you choose. Other ideas include adding seasonings like mint, or fruit juice.
You can sneak in some veggies in small amounts, so you don't taste it. Strawberry and banana are great at overpowering other flavors, like carrots or spinach. Similar to how smoothies are made.
You can also add protein powder in your mix, or use Greek yogurt and you'll up the protein.
Do you like iced coffee? How about freeze it! I made a cup of coffee just like a normally would and let it cool, then put it in my popsicle mold.
We also made mango banana, strawberry apple, and watermelon lime.
