Proof the Boys and Girls Club is a positive place

DOWNTOWN KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- You've heard their motto, "It's a Positive place for kids."

Now there's proof the Boys and Girls Cub really is.

Researchers at UT conducted a study and found that the club improves graduation rates among the kids it serves.

Executive Vice President of the BGCTNV, Lisa Hurst says,"In looking at our young people the longer they participate in a girls and boys club program, the more likely they are to be successful."

That's what a recent study revealed. And that members are more likely to graduate high school than if they didn't attend the club.

Pooser says, "Who knows where I would be I know I probably wouldn't be here."

30 year old Raphael Pooser took a tour of the place where he spent his childhood, the updated club on caswell

Pooser says, "My mom was looking for daycare, cause she didn't have anyone to look after us. I basically stayed until 8 everyday, that was my schedule. I put 60 percent of my time in the library and the other forty outside."

He attended summers and after school for nine years.

So, how did that work out for him? Pretty good.

"Right now I work at Oak Ridge National Lab."

And he credits the club in a major way.

Pooser says, "I put it at about 95 percent effectiveness for me going on to get my PhD I don't know if I would have even gone on to college, who knows."

And it comes full circle, Raphael worked as an education director when he graduated high school. He is on the board hoping to keep these youngsters on the right path.

We need a Boys Club in Karns!!! There are no after school activities for teens whose parents work. If they're too old for daycare and their parents work, they are just doomed to be latchkey kids.
