KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Tennessee's annual sales tax holiday kicks off Friday morning. Retailers around town have posted signs, planned sales, and even extended hours.

"I really feel good about it because we're still on sale. We have a lot of merchandise 50 to 70 percent off which puts lots of goods under $100," said Matthew McClellan of Bearden's McClellan and Co.

Tax exempt items include school supplies under $100, clothing under $100, and computers for under $1,500. Check the link below for full details.

Many parents say its an ideal time to stock up before school starts.

"We have two older boys 9 and 12 that go to Karns Elementary and Middle. And she doesn't go to school yet but they will have ballet clothes on tax free so we take advantage of that," said Nikki Johnson.

But others plan to stay far away from big retailers throughout the next few days.

"The stores are going to be way too crowded so I thought I'd come and shop a little early," said Amy Ramsey.

And financial experts caution to shop with care.

"The smart thing to do would be to look at your budget and ask is this purchase being made within the guidelines of our budget, we're not overstressing our budget, and does this fit into our long term goals," said financial adviser Jeffrey Lane.
