Unicoi County Jail Painted Pink To Calm Inmates, Curb Vandalism

Erwin, Tenn. (AP) -- Unicoi County inmates won't see red anymore when they get angry. They'll see pink.

Sheriff Kent Harris says jail officials have painted cell walls pink in hopes of calming inmates and curbing recent vandalism problems.

Harris says he's been told pink is a soothing color.

Roger Lloyd, who's in the Unicoi Jail on bad check charges, says he thought jailers were joking about painting the walls pink.

But now that they're painted a color he says looks like Pepto-Bismol, he says he thinks inmates have calmed down a bit.
