New Merriam-Webster dictionary includes 100 added words

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- Those looking through the new edition of Merriam-Webster's dictionary will have a ginormous list of new words to learn.

Along with the adjective that combines "gigantic" and "enormous," there about 100 newly added words in the company's collegiate dictionary, which goes on sale this fall.

Merriam-Webster traces "ginormous" back to 1948, when it appeared in a British dictionary of military slang.

The Southern rap style "crunk" also makes the list, along with the abbreviated "DVR," for digital video recorder. And "IED," shorthand for the improvised explosive devices that have become common in the war in Iraq, is also in there.
