WASHINGTON (AP) -- A State Department spokesman says the U.S. wants "to see the Russians stand down" from its conflict with the former Soviet republic of Georgia.
That statement follows a plea from the world's seven largest economic powers. They are urging Russia to accept an immediate cease-fire with Georgia and to respect Georgia's borders.
The State Department spokesman adds that the U.S. is hopeful that the U.N. Security Council will soon pass a "strong" resolution on the fighting.
A senior U.S. diplomat is on his way to Europe and "the region" to discuss the situation.
