BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) -- Lebanese police say a bomb explosion has killed a Druse politician from a pro-Syrian party in the hills east of Beirut.
Police officials say Sheik Saleh Aridi was killed Wednesday by a bomb that went off under his car in the village of Baissour. Aridi was a senior member of the pro-Syrian Lebanese Democratic Party.
It is the first assassination in about a year in Lebanon and comes less than a week before planned reconciliation talks among rival Lebanese factions.
Police had no further details on Wednesday's explosion in the Druse-populated hills near the resort town of Aley. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of government regulations.
