BAGHDAD (AP) -- Iraqi officials say a bomb has exploded in the Shiite holy city of Karbala, killing at least one person and wounding 12 others. Some of the wounded are women and children.
The blast occurred shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday in the center of Karbala about 800 yards from the shrine of Imam Hussein and a short distance from an Iraqi army checkpoint.
The report comes from police and hospital officials who were speaking on condition of anonymity because they are not supposed to talk to media.
Such attacks are rare in Karbala because of tight security around the city's Islamic shrines.
