HAVANA (AP) -- Cuba's foreign minister says U.S. trade sanctions are the biggest obstacle to recovery from hurricanes Ike and Gustav.
Felipe Perez Roque says Cuba can recover if sanctions are eased even for just six months. He was talking to reporters Thursday about Cuba's annual resolution to condemn the American embargo at the upcoming U.S. General Assembly.
This year's assembly vote comes on Oct. 29. The world body has sided with Cuba for the past 16 years in calling for the embargo to be lifted.
Cuba says Ike and Gustav caused US$5 million damage this month, but the embargo has been far more damaging, adding up to US$93 billion over nearly five decades.
