Afghan officials: 45 feared trapped in avalanche

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- Afghan authorities say an avalanche has struck two villages in a remote area of northeastern Afghanistan and 45 people are feared trapped in the snow.

Spokesman for the government of Nuristan province Mohammad Zareen says the avalanche that hit two villages in the Mondol district occurred Monday morning and that so far no rescue team has been able to get to the area.

Zareen says nearby villagers are working to try to locate victims and survivors.

Avalanches are common in the mountainous areas of northern Afghanistan.

At least 50 people died March 4 in an avalanche in Badakhshan province.
