NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Two women have filed a federal lawsuit that accuses four Nashville deputies of beating a man into a coma while he was being treated at a local hospital after he was arrested. Detainee Michael Minick died about a month later.
Minick's wife and mother say in their lawsuit that the 39-year-old was brutally beaten while restrained in a closed room on the seventh floor of Metro General Hospital.
Minick had been taken to the hospital to be evaluated after he was arrested in May 2011 on a charge of failure to appear on a traffic citation.
The women have sued the city of Nashville, the Metro Police Department, Corrections Corporation of America, General Hospital and several others, including the deputies.
A police investigation has cleared the deputies of wrongdoing.
