KNOXVILLE (UTSports.com) - Tennessee football is going sunup to sundown today, highlighted by the first junior varsity game in 15 years at Neyland Stadium. Kickoff for the Vols JV squad against Hargrave Military Academy is 7 p.m.
UT was into its practice routine by a hardy 6:30 this morning, staging a one-hour workout that closed the abbreviated off-week schedule.
“Our intensity was very good at this early-morning practice,” head coach Phillip Fulmer said. “The team was ready to practice and we were able to get in good work for our Georgia preparation. We also were able to have a really good period of conditioning at the end of the workout.”
Tennessee (2-2, 0-1 SEC) hosts Georgia one week from Saturday in a game that all but eliminates the loser from any chance at the Eastern Division crown. The Vols fell at Florida two weeks ago, while Georgia owns a home loss to South Carolina and a road overtime victory at Alabama.
The Bulldogs (3-1, 1-1) host Mississippi on Saturday.
“Fundamentally, this week we have made some progress,” Fulmer added. “Defensively, working more to stop the big play and having better fundamentals at getting off the blocks have been strong points of emphasis.”
Tonight’s junior varsity contest is the first for Tennessee since 1992. The Vols are dressing 55 players, 11 of whom are on scholarship.
“It’s a chance for some of our good young players to get playing time,” Fulmer said. “The more experience they have, the more they will be able to contribute. And for the walk-on players who support us so well during the year, it’s a chance for them to get game action and get involved with playing football under game conditions.”
Admission and parking are free, with space available in the G-10 garage located between the stadium and Thompson-Boling Arena. Fans should enter the stadium through Gate 21.
