(SUBMITTED) -- Landon Darty, a member of Tennessee’s 1956 SEC championship team, died Sunday at his home in Dothan, Ala., following a brief illness. He was 74.
Darty played three seasons for the Vols, started at end during his senior campaign of 1957. He was a valuable reserve on the previous year’s title-winning team that finished 10-1 and capped the season with a No. 2 ranking in the Associated Press poll. Darty was teammates on the 1956 Vols team with All-America performers Johnny Majors and Buddy Cruze, and with Bill Johnson the following season.
Darty, a Carbon Hill, Ala., native, roomed at UT with Bill Anderson, who played in the NFL before returning to Knoxville and serving as long-time color analyst with John Ward on the Vol Network.
After college, Darty began his career as a football coach, first in Florida then at Marion Military Institute in Alabama. He later became a realtor and investor and owned and operated his own company, Realty in the Rockies, in Woodland Park, Colo. He and his family lived in Jasper, Ala., and then Tuscaloosa before retiring in Dothan to be near his son and his family.
Darty was born Dec. 13, 1935, in Winston County, Ala. He graduated from Carbon Hill High School and played football at Tennessee, where he met and married his wife of 43 years, Peggy Darty. He was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church, the UT Letterman Association and Wild Turkey Federation. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and Tennessee football.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at noon Central time at Dothan’s Byrd Funeral Home Chapel on West Main Street, with Rev. Kyle Gatlin officiating. Burial for family members only will be held Thursday in Spring Hill Cemetery in Carbon Hill.
Honorary pallbearers will be former teammates of Tennessee football team.
