KNOXVILLE (KnoxNews.com) - Trey Gaff may play in the secondary, but his performance last Friday was second to none. The Gibbs High School junior defensive back made six tackles and picked off three passes for a total of 70 returns yards. His 25-yard return for six points against Grace helped the Eagles remain undefeated at 4-0. For that, he earned the PrepXtra pros’ selection as defensive player of the week honors.
Tanner Williams, the oft-passing quarterback from Anderson County, picked up the offensive award. He threw seven touchdowns with no interceptions against Central to go along with his 409 yards.
In the PrepXtra fans’ eyes, Coalfield’s Dylan Vann was the clear favorite as the defensive winner from the online voting. He recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown and had a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown. His 2,368 votes more than held up against the 1,664 that Webb’s Bryan Berube tallied. Gaff had 352 votes, and Bearden’s Drew Williamson received 235 votes.
Offensively, Williams picked up 1,151 votes from the fans online, but those fell just shy of the 1,241 collected by Wartburg quarterback Rusty Phillips. He threw for 221 yards and four touchdowns as Wartburg undefeated at 4-0. Webb quarterback Parker Wormsley (382 votes) and Gibbs running back Andy Hibbett (217) rounded finished third and fourth.
