Pearl: 'I am the basketball coach at Tennessee'

KNOXVILLE (WVLT) -- Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl held his annual "Fore the Kids" Golf tournament at Gettysvue Country Club Friday. Proceeds from the event go towards Camp Koinonia and their efforts to help special-needs children. A portion of the money raised this year will also benefit UT's Outlive program to fight cancer.

Friday's tourney was one week removed from the bombshell announcement regarding coach Pearl and the UT basketball program.

It's been a hard week and busy week for the head coach, who's also heard the rumors and speculation about his job status at the University.

"I just want to reassure all the fans," Pearl told Sports Overtime's Rick Russo, "That I am the basketball coach at the University of Tennessee, I'm going to be the basketball coach at the University of Tennessee and I want to be for a long, long time. I'm very sorry for putting the University through this.

"We run a clean program, we're going to get through this. I can't talk about the investigation. I know people have to inquire and they have to report on it. The things they speculate on, some have some accuracy other things don't.

"We'll get through it, have a good year and put this behind us."

Just let pearl go. If his players lied or broke rule he would dismiss them. Fire him and AD Hamilton.

Ya'll keep saying he loves the kids and that is great but he not showing himself as a great example by what he did. Now the kids saw what he did means it is ok for them do the same thing he did, go out, cheat and steal like some of the other players did. He even admit that UT runs a clean program, apparently it is not after what he did, regardless how the stadium is full of fans. Focus on the kids future and how it affects them!

Those of us who have known Bruce Almighty over the last 20 years can only smile and say his past has finally caught up with him. This guy deserves the "just cause" ban from the NCAA. After 8 years or so, maybe some NAIA school will pay him $50k to coach. Tennessee, this guy is nothing but a liability and an embarrassment, but we said that 5 years ago when you hired him.

Pearl lies about cheating on his wife. Pearl lies about cheating on recuiting. He had a second chance, and he has proven that he is a liar and a cheater. Is this who we want influnenceing young men. Real men and real leaders should not be liars and cheaters!

Coach Pearl made a mistake(lesson learned) but he has brought excitement and energy to the UT campus, and he shows that he loves kids. He has brought a new meaning to basketball, he is young at heart and that is good for our young people. How many other coaches would paint them self any color? There is nothing better than having a Tennessee Pearl. Go Vols

Bruce is the best basketball coach we have ever had at tennessee, he fills the seats and he wins ball games. It would be a huge mistake for the university to let him go.. Good coaches are too hard to find.....
