GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Police in Gainesville say a walk-on defensive back for the University of Florida football team was killed early today in a motorcycle mishap.
Redshirt freshman Michael Guilford was not wearing helmet when the bike he was driving hit a median at a high rate of speed. Neither was his female passenger, who was also killed.
A police spokesman says officers estimate the motorcycle was traveling 25 to 30 miles per hour over the speed limit.
Police are awaiting autopsy and toxicology reports and investigating a report that the students had been at a gathering at a nearby apartment complex before the crash.
The 13th-ranked Gators are off this week.
