William Blount Rebounds, Topples Oak Ridge

By  |

OAK RIDGE (WVLT) - William Blount was getting used to losing by one point.

Consecutive setbacks at the hands of Maryville (20-19) and Farragut (36-35) left the Governors (5-2) reeling and scrambling to retain the dominance that characterized their hot start -- and Friday at Oak Ridge, they found their rhythm in a sloppy 21-10 victory.

The Wildcats (6-1) dropped their first game of the year, unable to keep alive the momentum they gained from early William Blount miscues.

After holding the Governors on their first drive, Oak Ridge blocked the punt, plucked the ball off the turf and returned it to the end zone to take a 7-0 lead. Later in the quarter, the Govs botched a snapped punt, but held the Wildcats to a field goal.

But William Blount rallied, scoring on a Tyler Burstrom pass to cut the deficit to 10-7. Then, with Oak Ridge deep in Governors territory, Wildcats running back Jarrod Stephens fumbled and Blount recovered in the end zone for a touchback. The Govs capitalized, scoring to take a 13-10 halftime lead.

Oak Ridge looks to rebound next week at Soddy Daisy, while William Blount travels to McMinn County.
