Tennessee head athletic trainer Jason McVeigh reports that freshman linebacker Shane Reveiz underwent a successful cardiac surgical procedure Wednesday in Atlanta.
"He is expected to make a full recovery and return to football when released by his physicians," McVeigh said, adding that Reveiz will stay in Atlanta until the weekend but should resume classes next week.
Reveiz is a Knoxville native whose brother, Nick, was a special teams regular for the Vols this year and whose father, Fuad, and uncle, Carlos, were All-SEC placekickers in the 1980s.
Tennessee walk-on linebacker Shane Reveiz underwent a successful cardiac surgical procedure to remove a two-centimeter growth on his heart Wednesday in Atlanta.
Reveiz, a former Farragut High School standout, is expected to be able to continue his football career and could begin physical activity on a limited basis in three to four weeks, UT coach Phillip Fulmer said.
“He is expected to make a full recovery and return to football when released by his physicians,” head athletic trainer Jason McVeigh said in a UT release.
Doctors were able to use a less-invasive procedure to remove the growth, a major factor in the relatively short recovery time.
Reveiz will remain in Atlanta through the weekend and is expected to return to classes next week.
Reveiz’s brother, Nick, is also a UT linebacker and his father, Fuad is a former UT and NFL kicker.
“(Shane’s parents) Fuad and Gail wanted me to express their thanks to the team of doctors that worked with Shane,” Fulmer said.
Doctors initially found the growth through an echocardiogram provided to all UT athletes and donated by Mickie King and his Atlanta-based company, Digirad Ultrascan Solutions.
Fulmer said the test, which also revealed a heart defect in men’s basketball player Duke Crews, “probably saved Shane’s life.”
