KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- Two UT football players were cited for simple possession after a traffic stop in Knoxville Friday night.

Knoxville Police spokesperson Darrell DeBusk says officers pulled over a Dodge Magnum at 11th and White for a tag light violation.

DeBusk says police smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle as they approached the car. Officers asked for an received consent to search, and allegedly found three marijuana cigars, one of which was half-smoked inside the vehicle.

Gerald Jones, 18, and Ahmad Paige, 18, were both charged with simple possession. That's a misdemeanor. Jones was also cited for not wearing a seat belt, and the tag light violation.

Also in the vehicle, according to the police report: A third UT football player, identified as William Brimfield, and a Muskogee, Oklahoma, teen who told police he was on his official recruiting visit to the University of Tennessee.

Those two people were not charged.

"I am extremely disappointed in these young men and the decision they made," Fulmer said in a prepared news release issued Monday afternoon by U.T. "This is an example of youth and stupidity by boys that need to become men and not make stupid and irrational decisions trying to impress each other."

Fulmer went on to say that he had met with the three players involved. "They have a number of things they need to do to get back in our good graces," he said.

Fulmer said the three athletes will have to perform community service with a drug rehabilitation facility, participate in police ride-alongs, and be subjected to more frequent drug tests.

They also will be prohibited from hosting recruits for one year.
