The Tennessee baseball program along with its Bullpen Club is introducing a new opportunity for UT baseball fans to gather, eat and listen to some stirring stories from individuals within the game. On Thursdays before Tennessee’s final three home SEC series, Tennessee Bullpen Club Luncheons will take place at the Bridgeview Grill on Neyland Drive.
The luncheons begin at 11:45 a.m. and are modeled after those hosted by the quarterback and tip-off clubs. Admission is $10 per person. RSVPs are preferred, however, tickets will be available at the door. Luncheons are set for April 10, May 1 and May 8.
Guest speakers for this season’s luncheons include individuals with backgrounds in baseball coaching/managing, front office work and broadcasting.
On Thursday, April 10, prior to Tennessee’s series with Alabama, Dave Bristol will be the guest speaker. Bristol, a close personal friend of UT head coach Todd Raleigh, is a former big-league manager for the Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants.
A native of Macon, Ga., Bristol began his managerial career in the Cincinnati Reds farm system at the age of 24 with Hornell of the New York-Penn League in 1957. By 1964, he was managing the Reds’ top farm team, the San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League, where, at age 31, he guided the club to a pennant. His rise to the big leagues followed.
Bristol now resides in Andrews, N.C.
Tennessee Smokies President Doug Kirchhofer will be the guest speaker at the May 1 luncheon prior to the Vanderbilt series. Kirchhofer is in his seventh season as president of the Smokies. A major player in the minor-league sports industry for the past 15 years, he has extensive experience in minor-league franchise development and sports-facility management.
Kirchhofer got his start in professional sports in 1989 as part of the group that formed and operated the Nashville Knights of the East Coast Hockey League.
And on May 8, former radio voice of the Tennessee baseball team and current Tennessee Titans Director of Broadcasting Mike Keith will be the Bullpen Club Luncheon guest speaker. Keith served as the play-by-play announcer for the baseball Vols from 1988-89 and 1992-98.
A native of Franklin, Tenn., and a UT graduate, Keith was inducted into the Tennessee Baseball Hall of Fame as a broadcaster in 2006. The 2008 NFL season will mark his ninth year as the “Voice of the Titans.”
