Student Mascot Dies After Being Hit By Car Before NCAA Game In New Jersey

Hackensack, NJ (AP) -- A student who performed as the mascot for the University Of North Carolina basketball team has died.

Jason Ray was hit by a car on Friday in New Jersey, just hours before the team played in an NCAA tournament game.

He'd walked to a convenience store near the hotel where he was staying in Hackensack, New Jersey, and was struck from behind while on the shoulder of a highway.

Ray died today at a hospital. He was 21. He'd been scheduled to graduate in May with a major in business administration and a minor in religion.

No charges have been filed against the driver of the SUV that hit him. Police say the driver stopped immediately to try to help Ray, and called 911.
