Tennessee Golf Puts Three On All-SEC Team

For the second year in a row, three Lady Vols have earned All-Southeastern Conference honors, as announced by the SEC office today. Junior Marci Turner and sophomore Nicole Smith have been named to the first and second teams, respectively, for the second consecutive year. Freshman Angela Oh was tabbed to the second team and is the second-best freshman in the conference in terms of national ranking (No. 67), head-to-head record versus the other nominees (11-8-0), and versus par (3.14).

“I'm happy to have three players named to the All-SEC teams,” head coach Judi Pavon said. “Being named to the All-SEC First Team for the second year is a great achievement for Marci. Nicole has once again been named to the second team and just missed making the first team. She has had a very solid season. Angela is one of only two freshmen to receive All-SEC recognition this season which was an awesome accomplishment for her. I'm very proud of all three. Their hard work has paid off.”

Turner, who was also up for SEC Golfer and Scholar Athlete of the Year, tied for second at the conference championship on Sunday. As a sophomore, the Tompkinsville, Ky., product was named to the first-team All-SEC and was a second-team National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American selection. In the classroom, Turner is a two-time NGCA Academic All-American and was on the SEC Academic Honor Roll. She currently has a team-leading 73.4 stroke average and has placed in the top 10 in five tournaments this season.

Smith adds her All-SEC nod to the one she received as a freshman, as well as an SEC Academic Honor Roll award. The Riverside, Calif., native has placed in the top 25 in each of the 10 tournaments this year. She earned her first title at the collegiate level when she defeated 89 players to win the Golf Daytona Beach Fall Preview on Sept. 24. The tournament was held at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla., the site of this year’s NCAA Championships, May 22-25.

As a freshman, Oh has been a staple in the squad by earning scores for the team in each tournament this year. She was ninth at the SEC Championships on Sunday, second on the team only to Turner. She has finished in a top-20 position in eight competitions this year and was named to the Mid-Season All-Freshman Team by GolfWorld Magazine. From Maple Shade, N.J., Oh has been the top Lady Vol scorer in three tournaments and won the playoff hole at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships on Oct. 15 to give Tennessee its first team title in its home tournament.

Tennessee will return to the links on May 10 at NCAA Regionals. The sites for the tournaments are Baton Rouge, La., Ann Arbor, Mich., and St. George, Utah. The NCAA will announce each team’s location on April 30.
