Sevierville, TN – The Tennessee Smokies snapped a four game losing streak by beating the Carolina Mudcats on Friday night by a score of 4-2. A boisterous crowd of 4,408 watched Mark Holliman (3-0) pitch six strong innings, with Chris Walker and Jorge Cortes powering the Smokies offense by driving in two runs apiece.
It looked to be the same old story in the 1st inning for the Smokies, who have struggled early on in the game as of late. The Mudcats drew first blood in the first inning after Jai Miller doubled to lead off the game, and then eventually scored to stake Carolina to a 1-0 lead.
The Smokies stormed back in the third inning. After Issmael Salas walked, Holliman advanced the runner to 2nd base on a ground out. Walker then doubled down the left field line to score Salas to tie the game at 1-1. Cortes then singled Walker home in the next at bat, and the Smokies took a 2-1 lead.
In the 5th inning, Gary Cates starting things off with a brilliant bunt single. Salas singled to put runners at 2nd & 3rd, but Cates was thrown out at third on a fielder’s choice. Walker then strolled to the plate and ripped a single to score Salas. Cortes then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Holliman to make the score 4-1 Smokies.
Carolina struck back with a run in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 4-2, but the Smokies pitching shut the Mudcats down the rest of the night. Holliman gave up two runs in six innings, with James Henderson coming on for two innings of scoreless work. Geoffrey Jones came on in the ninth to record his second save of the season. Daniel Barone (0-2) took the loss for the Mudcats.
The Smokies will host the Mudcats again on Saturday night at Smokies Park for game three of the five game series. The Smokies will send left-hander Paul Schappert (1-1, 6.08) to the mound to face Mudcats righty Gaby Hernandez (2-2, 3.22).
