Track Titles Nothing New At Tennessee...

The University of Tennessee men's track and field team scored 129.5 points over the weekend to win the SEC Outdoor Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The team title was Tennessee's 25th outdoor SEC title and 68th conference championship including cross country, indoor and outdoor track. The Vols lead the conference in both categories, with LSU second in outdoor titles with 22 and Arkansas second in overall championships with 43.

Tennessee's title was its third in the last seven years and fourth since 1991. The Vols last SEC outdoor title came in 2002 as they claimed their second of back-to-back championships. Tennessee now owns one-third of the conference outdoor titles, as last weekend was the 75th version of the SEC Outdoor Championships.

Tennessee won 15 consecutive outdoor conference championships from 1964-78 and 16 straight SEC track titles (indoor and outdoor) beginning with an indoor championship in 1964 and continuing through the 1971 outdoor title. The Vols also had a string of six straight outdoor titles from 1981-86.

Tennessee also has had its share of national recognition by winning five national championships. The Vols 1972 cross country team captured the school's first official NCAA championship in any sport. In1974, Tennessee made its way back to the top by winning the NCAA outdoor crown. The Vols also won outdoor championships in 1991 and 2001. Tennessee completed the program's triple crown in 2002 by bringing an indoor national title to Knoxville. Tennessee is one of only four schools in the nation to have at least one national championship in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.

Tennessee leads the SEC in overall men's championships with 112 after also claiming the 2007 conference golf title earlier this spring. In addition to the 68 track titles (cross country 25, indoor track 18, outdoor track 25), the Vols have captured 13 football championships, 10 swimming and diving titles, eight basketball crowns, seven tennis titles and three each in baseball and golf. Tennessee has a comfortable lead over Florida's 88 and LSU's 78 overall SEC men's championships.
