Chase Headley joined an elite list of former Tennessee baseball players Thursday when he was called up from the Double-A minor-league ranks to join the San Diego Padres Major League club. Headley played third base for the Volunteers from 2004-05 and becomes the 32nd Vol ever to play in the Major Leagues.

He is expected to see action Friday when the Padres begin a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

The Fountain, Colo., native is the first Vol to earn a big-league promotion since Chris Burke (1999-2001) made his debut with the Houston Astros on July 4, 2004.

Headley was named to the Texas League South Division All-Star Team earlier this week after posting some impressive offensive numbers with the San Antonio Missions. In 62 games at the Double-A level, he led the Texas League in batting average (.357), on-base percentage (.433) and slugging percentage (.648) while ranking second in RBIs (42). He also led the Missions with 45 runs, 81 hits, 21 doubles and 13 homers.

Headley arrived at UT in 2004 as an undrafted sophomore, but in two seasons on Rocky Top he developed into an All-America honoree and one of the nation's top third baseman. He was selected by the Padres in the second round of the 2005 draft.

In addition, The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled infielder Augie Ojeda from Triple-A Tucson, sending infielder Alberto Callaspo to the minors.

Ojeda, returns to a Major League club for the first time since 2004, when he played 30 games with the Minnesota Twins. A career .219 hitter, he has played 178 games in five big league seasons.

Callaspo was optioned to Tucson after Arizona's 7-1 loss to the New York Yankees. He got into the game as a pinch-runner when Orlando Hudson jammed his left ankle, stayed in to play second base and went 0-for-1.
