SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. - Intermittent rain delays through the first two days of the U.S. Women's Open at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C., forced Lady Vol Marci Turner off the course on Thursday with 10 holes left to play. She finished the round yesterday morning with a four-over-par 75 before beginning round two in the afternoon. Play was suspended once more, leaving the All-American with 6 holes to play and a 7:30 a.m. tee time today. She finished with a 76. Her 36-hole total is a nine-over-par 151.
"It was really frustrating," Turner said. "Every 30 minutes we were waiting for an update. It was really hard to get in any kind of rhythm when you don't know when you're going to get back out there. I don't like to wait. It's still a good experience though. The course was still tough because there hasn't been any rain on it.
"I felt good about shooting a 75 in the first round. I played the last 10 holes really well. The first few holes weren't that bad, but not being able to get in any kind of rhythm hurt."
En route to her first-round score of 75, the Tompkinsville, Ky., native carded two birdies on no. 9 and 11 and made par on 10 holes. In round two, Turner made par on 13 holes and hit the fairway 86 percent of the time, but lack of a single birdie brought her score up to a 76. She finished tied for 93rd and ninth among 23 amateurs.
This is the first U.S. Women's Open for the rising senior. She finished her junior year as Tennessee's leading scorer and received a first team All-SEC nod and honorable mention All-American award by the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA).
