AUSTIN, Texas (cbssportsline.com/AP) -- Former Kentucky women's basketball coach Mickie DeMoss was hired Tuesday as an assistant at Texas.
DeMoss had quit abruptly in April, saying she wanted to take a break from the game after 30 years.
Her hiring completes coach Gail Goestenkors' staff. Goestenkors was hired earlier this year to succeed Jody Conradt, who retired in March.
"Months ago, I left the coaching profession -- to retire, really -- and take my first break from the game of basketball," DeMoss said in a statement released by the university. "It was not an easy decision, but one I truly needed to make."
DeMoss said the time off allowed her to reassess what she wanted to do. DeMoss said she had a number of job opportunities.
"Frankly, the situation at Texas is the only job in basketball that would take me out of retirement," DeMoss said. "I am very comfortable with this decision to move forward and to work for Gail and the university."
DeMoss coached the past four seasons at Kentucky, compiling a 71-56 record and making three postseason appearances. She was the SEC Coach of the Year in 2006. She also was an associate head coach at Tennessee, and an assistant at Auburn and Memphis State. She was head coach at Florida from 1979-1983.
According to DeMoss' UK contract, if she left Kentucky to take another position at a Division One school, she would have to pay $200,000 for each year left on the contract. If that is the case, that's four years, meaning DeMoss might have to pay Kentucky $800,000.
A University of Kentucky spokesperson says the university has no comment at this time.
