Rising UT seniors, 6-4 forward/center Nicky Anosike (Staten Island, N.Y.) and 5-11 guard Alexis Hornbuckle (Charleston, W.Va.), continue training with the Pan American Games Team at American University’s Bender Arena and at the Washington Mystics Practice Facility at the Verizon Center prior to their departure for Brazil on July 16. The USA opens play against Columbia on July 20 in Rio de Janeiro.
Anosike and Hornbuckle were starters for the Lady Vols on the 2007 NCAA Championship team. From her post position, Anosike tossed in 7.5 ppg and grabbed 6.2 rpg, while as the two guard Hornbuckle led the team in assists with 4.0 per contest and averaged 10.2 ppg and 5.1 rpg.
Also in Washington, D.C. will be former Lady Vol All-Americans Tamika Catchings (Indiana Fever) and Kara Lawson (Sacramento Monarchs) who will be participating in the WNBA All-Star game (hosted by the Washington Mystics) on Sunday, July 15, at the Verizon Center. The All-Star game will be televised nationally on ABC-TV, with tip-off scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET.
Catchings, a 6-1 power forward who was the leading vote-getter in the WNBA Eastern Conference, will make her fifth straight start at forward for the East. Lawson, a 5-9 point guard and a D.C. area native, will make her first All-Star appearance as selected by WNBA President Donna Orender. “K-Law” will replace injured Seattle guard Sue Bird, as a reserve for the Western Conference.
Catchings is putting up MVP-type numbers again in 2007 – she leads the league in steals (3.28 spg) and is among the WNBA’s top 10 in points (8th, 16.9 ppg), rebounds (3rd, 8.8 rpg), assists (7th, 4.4 apg) and blocks (10th, 1.11 bpg). She is the only player in WNBA history ever to rank among the WNBA’s top 10 in all five categories, having done so in both 2002 and 2006.
Lawson averages 11.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in her fifth year in the WNBA. She currently ranks sixth in the League in free-throw percentage (.900) and seventh in three-point field goals made (30). Lawson’s 11.3 points per game is the best in the League among players coming off the bench.
Anosike, Hornbuckle and their Pan Am Games teammates have no practice scheduled on Sunday afternoon and they plan to be in attendance at the WNBA All-Star Game.
