Sevierville -- The Tennessee Smokies Professional Baseball Club, the Class AA Southern League Affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, announce that Kerry Wood, starting pitcher for the Cubs, will appear in relief for the Smokies on Tuesday July 31st. Tennessee will face the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx in Jackson, TN at Pringles Park. Game time is set for 8:05 pm EST.
Wood has appeared in several minor-league rehab stints over the past two weeks, pitching seven innings for both Peoria and the Mesa Rookie League. The Cubs are priming Wood to join the bullpen for their stretch run in the NL Central, with this appearance as a platform for his immediate future. Wood is currently rehabilitating from arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in August 2005.
Kerry is a 30-year-old veteran is a native of Scottsdale, AZ. He is in his 11th season of professional baseball, with major league experience for the last eight years. Wood was drafted in the first round of the 1995 draft by Chicago, and has spent his entire career with the Cubs organization.
